The Institute for Computational Design (ICD) and the Institute of Engineering and Computational Mechanics (ITM) at the University of Stuttgart are investigating the architectural potential of designed granular systems using analogue and digital methods. In the investigation of aggregates, experiments and simulations play a crucial role as only through these the observation of the behaviour of the granulate becomes possible. The development of computational methods in recent years has opened up the capacities of investigating these systems on a level so far not available to researchers and renders the topic relevant especially with regards to computational design. The ICD and the ITM are thus using the combination of experiment and simulation to investigate architectural aggregate systems.
